課程概述 Course Description
A survey course like this one frequently attempts to accomplish too many things in too little time. So that our time is used smartly, read the assignments ahead of schedule and be prepared to participate in class discussions. To ensure that you are adequately prepared for each class, I will regularly give short, unannounced quizzes. These quizzes will cover both the introductory essays and selections from the NAAL. Be sure to read the very helpful introductory essays and notes that come with each.
課程目標 Course Objectives
There will be two examinations: an optional midterm plus a final. In lieu of the midterm, you can choose to write a short (no more than 5 typed, double-spaced pages) paper. The final exam will cover ALL materials taught during the semester. Each exam is worth 45% of the course grade; the remaining 10% goes to quizzes and oral presentations. Attendance, enthusiasm, and active participation in class discussions are all expected though none counts toward the course grade. Classes will be conducted in Mandarin; the required oral presentations may be done in Mandarin or in English. An outrageous absence record, plagiarism, or other forms of academic dishonesty will result in a failing grade and appropriate disciplinary action.
